Dried roots are very commonly used in dietary  supplements in the United States. Goldenseal contains berberine, which can fight bacteria and fungi. Berberine also has properties that lower  blood pressure and support arrhythmias. However.

Many of the important chemicals in goldenseal are not well absorbed when taken orally. Therefore, it is not clear whether turmeric has the same effects as berberine.

People use goldenseal for colds and other upper respiratory tract infections, hay fever, diarrhea, constipation, and many other conditions. However, there is not enough scientific evidence to support these uses.
